Non-Members
We as ride organisers understand how daunting it can be for non-members who are new to the sport to enter an endurance ride. Therefore we have created this page to help you along the way with advice, support and encouragement to take part and enjoy yourself. We have provided the essential information you will need to be aware off which we hope will make you feel more at ease before coming to one our events
Before Applying for a Ride
Please look through the web site including the Durham & Teesside group website for basic information for non-members.
If you are thinking about applying for a ride and are unsure on how to proceed first think about your horse's level of fitness. All non-members are welcome to compete in any type of NCR class, however if this is your first time it is recommended to enter the shorter distance to gather a feel of how the sport works.
Look through the classes and decide on which distance you would like to do. Once decided please read through the schedule as it contains the relevant information everyone needs to know.
Non-members are very welcome to camp and corral and come along to the social night.
You then need to click on 'entering' and follow the instructions. Please click on an entry form and print it off. You then need to fill it in appropriately a pop it in an envelope with your cheque and a SAE (A5 size with a large letter stamp) to the address provided.
(If you are having problems please do contact us as we are happy to help)
The envelope will normally be posted back to you 5 -10 days before the event. Please look at your map and study it well so you are familiar with the landmarks and types of tracks you will be riding on. Then fill out you vet sheet - you should declare any bumps, marks etc. which your horse has before entering the ride so that the vet knows if any new ones have occurred after finishing the ride. It is essential that you read all the information which we send out as it may be very important.
You will also need to know your maximum and minimum time for completing the course (in order to ride at the correct speed) - this is usually up to the individual to work out prior to the event, however we will provide them within the information for this ride and a copy will be displayed at the venue.
On The Day!!!
When entering the venue there will be parking marshals in operation therefore please listen to them and park sensibly. Once you have parked up it is reccommended that you leave your horse in the trailer whilst you go over to the secretary's caravan where you will need to book in and collect your number bib.
You can then return to the trailer and spend time getting your horse ready. You must present to the vet but pleasure riders will only need to do a 'trot up'. Hopefully your horse will be sound and you must then present to the time keeper fully tacked up and ready to go within 30 minutes.
Please note: Horses are not to be vetted with tack on with the only exception is a bridle for those which need extra control.
As a group we are very laid back but please try to start within the time bracket and not leave it till the last minute.
Your start time will be indicated on the paper returned with you map.
When you are ready to leave you must present to the timekeeper and they will say when you are free to go. There will be so many minutes given before the next rider can leave, therefore there may be a queue at certain periods so please be patient.
Whilst on course you must follow the route marking and read you map to ensure you are on the correct track.
The route marking colours will be indicated on the day at the caravan
Whilst out on course there will be several marshals and checkpoints. If there are any problems please report this to them or if you are not near them please call the emergency number provided. When passing the checkpoints could you please shout out your number and make sure the person at the checkpoint has got it.
On the return into the venue report back to the time-keeper and then spend time with your horse offering him a drink and sloshing him with water. Also make sure you look after yourself by having a drink and maybe a bar of chocolate.
You must then present to the vet for a trot up 30 minutes after finishing. Hopefully your horse will be sound and you can then return to your trailer/wagon. You can then spend time with your horse, having something to eat or talking to other members.
Please allow at least 30 minutes after presenting to the vet to return to the caravan to hand in your bib and collect your rosette. We may have a lot of speeds to work out so please bear with us - we will do our best!!!
After this you are welcome to chat to other members, have a look around or spend time at your trailer until you are all packed up and ready to leave.
We hope you will have enjoyed your ride and found the event very friendly and a pleasurable experience.
